Monkey Bread

Ahh, the pull-apart, cinnamon-sugar sweet treat that is a crowd pleaser with almost any group:  Monkey Bread!  There is just something about this that people really like, but if you’re like me, you don’t think of it very often.  It’s one of those foods you would serve to a group of kids at a birthday party, but with adults, it tends to get forgotten.  Then you get to eat one, and you remember how much fun they are and how good they taste.

My dear husband has told me many times that he likes monkey bread, but I didn’t have a recipe for it until my final year working as a preschool teacher.  We had a unit each year all about cooking, and my last year there, I asked the parents to bring me a copy of the kids’ favorite recipes.  I compiled all of those into a cookbook for the kids to take home with them.  One my kids brought monkey bread, and now that I’ve had the recipe for over a year, I finally decided to make it.  It was good.  It would have been better if the middle had gotten done, which would have worked better had I not over-filled the pan, but it was good.  🙂

Now, this recipe calls for two cans of biscuits, but instead of buying the biscuits, I just made them using my Baking Powder Biscuit recipe, which is at https://crystalpoe.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/biscuits/.  However, if you make your own biscuits for this recipe, then only fill your pan about half full.  Any more than that, and when the biscuits expand as they cook, it will overflow into your oven.  I caught it in time and was able to set the loaf pan on a cookie sheet and let it drip onto that.  Thank goodness!  That would have been one smelly mess in the bottom my oven.  Anyhow, live and learn.  😉
